One year ago, Textile Exchange was launching its Biodiversity Benchmark, which aimed at understanding how the fashion and textile industry raw material sourcing strategies impact biodiversity.
The results of this vast survey are now publicly available, providing several learnings and calls to action ”for the industry to take these insights further”.
Unsurprinsigly, the importance of material sourcing is highlighted, as “Sourcing decisions made today will have a direct impact on the resources needed by the industry tomorrow”.
Example of recommendations include:
- Map raw material sourcing location to link to potential specific biodiversity risks
- Adopt sourcing restriction measures related to material or production techniques considered as unsustainable (water, chemical or energy consuming)
- Go beyond preferred materials transition and target specific biodiversity-related initiatives
